Construction of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia Cathedral Began in 1882 and Continues to This Day
An Extraordinary Construction Journey
Beginnings of the Grand Project
Construction work on the church began in Barcelona’s Eixample district under the supervision of architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. Antonio Gaudí took charge of the project just one year later and completely reimagined the design. The renowned architect devoted the last fifteen years of his life exclusively to this work.
Ongoing Challenges
The construction process faced multiple obstacles, such as the Spanish Civil War which led to the destruction of parts of the structure. Construction work currently relies on visitor donations and private contributions. The estimated cost to complete it exceeds 400 million euros.
Revolutionary Design and Deep Symbolism
Lofty Towers Bearing Religious Significance
Upon completion, the church will consist of eighteen towers symbolizing prominent religious figures. The twelve towers represent the Apostles, while the four symbolize the Evangelists, with the remaining two towers dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Christ.
Unique Architectural Details
The cathedral’s three facades are distinguished by distinctive narrative themes: the Nativity of Christ, the Passion, and the future Glory facade. The designs integrate elements of nature and the revolutionary geometric forms for which Gaudí became famous.
Prospects for Project Completion
Expected Completion Date
Catalan authorities aim to complete all the church’s towers by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death. This includes the central tower dedicated to Jesus Christ, which will reach a height of 170 meters.
Contemporary Challenges
Current obstacles include preserving Gaudí’s original style while utilizing modern techniques. The project management emphasizes its commitment to the fundamental design while incorporating some necessary modifications to ensure structural stability.
