Al-Karm Coastal Municipality Launches Innovative Environmental Project

The coastal municipality of Al-Karm near the Tunisian capital has launched an innovative environmental project using advanced filtration devices. The initiative relies on installing “Zigofilters” made of steel to purify rainwater before it reaches the sea, with more than 2500 units implemented in 25 municipalities so far.

The filtration devices work by trapping solid pollutants in rainwater drainage channels within residential areas. This technology prevents waste from reaching the sea directly, as they are installed at the connection points of drains with the marine environment.

Characteristics of the Devices Used

Zigofilters are made of durable steel materials that withstand harsh climatic conditions. They feature a design that allows for the purification of large quantities of water while maintaining natural flow during periods of heavy rainfall.

The cost of a single unit is approximately 200 USD, with the price varying according to the size of the filter and the quantities required. This cost represents a long-term environmental investment that contributes to the protection of marine resources.

Wide Spread in Municipalities

The project has covered more than 25 coastal municipalities so far, with a special focus on areas of high population density. The distribution covers multiple areas of the Tunisian coast, which extends for more than 1300 kilometers.
